Search the site

The Center on Religion & the Professions works to improve the religious literacy of professionals, to help them serve a diverse public.

We help professionals better understand religion in the lives of those they serve by:

•   Supporting ground-breaking research on how religion impacts people and encouraging its use by the appropriate professionals;
•   Creating resources and training to improve the religious literacies among professionals;
•   Developing and testing curriculum in religion for all disciplines;
•   Presenting public forums and other activities to increase the visibility of religion in the public sphere.

Journal submission guidelines

You can contribute scholarly articles, essays or book reviews to the Center’s On-line Journal. The editors welcome original, unpublished scholarly articles, essays and book reviews that address America's religious pluralism, professional service, ethics and values, and professional education and training.

Among the areas of interest are the professions of business, engineering, health professions, journalism, law, medicine, nursing, religious studies and social work. The editors also welcome submissions that explore professional ethics, sociology, psychiatry, psychology and other disciplines related to the Center’s mission.

Articles selected for publication spotlight original scholarship, innovative practices or other compelling ideas. To reflect the Center's interdisciplinary focus, articles should engage scholars, professionals and members of the public alike.

Scholarly Articles and Essays

Scholarly articles should contain these components:

Title Page: The article's title should give an accurate impression of the work and entice people to read the article or essay. The title page should include the name of the author(s), affiliation(s) and contact information (address, e-mail, phone, and fax).
Abstract: The abstract (200 words or less) should summarize the purpose and findings of the article.
Body: The body of the article or essay should not exceed 6,000 words. It should include subheadings as appropriate, and footnotes should be used. Additional instructions are provided under "Submission Guidelines."
References: Submissions should include a References section that lists all sources.

Book Reviews

The journal publishes reviews of books dealing with trends in the religious complexity of the United States, professional ethics, and the interactions between religious traditions and professional practices and education. If you would like to write a book review, it should include a description of the author's main points, followed by a critical, scholarly analysis of the work. Book reviews should be approximately 1,000 words.

The journal also welcomes books submitted for review; however, the editors cannot guarantee that all books received will be reviewed.

Submission Guidelines

If you are submitting an article or book review for consideration, you should follow these formatting guidelines:

  • Authors should use the style guidelines in The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition.
  • Manuscripts must be submitted as Microsoft Word files (Mac or PC) using Word 97 or a more recent version of the software.
  • Manuscript text must be in a standard, 12-point font such as Times New Roman, Arial or Helvetica.
  • Manuscripts must be double spaced with 1-inch margins on all sides and printed on only one side of white, 8½ x 11-inch paper.
  • Figures or other illustrations should not be embedded in the manuscript file. Instead, name figures consecutively (Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.) and save each separately in one of the following formats: .gif, .jpg, .eps, or .tif. In the manuscript, clearly indicate the placement of the figures ("Insert Figure 1."). All figures should include descriptive captions and must be referenced in the text.
  • Tables created using Microsoft Word's table feature may be placed in the manuscript. Tables should be numbered consecutively and given descriptive captions. All tables must be referenced in the text.
  • Pages must be numbered consecutively with page numbers centered at the bottom of each page. Fasten pages with a paper clip (not a staple).

Editors and reviewers strive to evaluate manuscripts in a timely fashion, but manuscript reviews can take up to three months. The Curators of the University of Missouri will hold the copyright to all articles selected for publication.

Submissions must be saved on a floppy disk or CD and mailed along with two hard copies to the address below.
