The Center on Religion & the Professions works to improve the religious literacy of professionals, to help them serve a diverse public.


We help professionals better understand religion in the lives of those they serve by:

•   Supporting ground-breaking research on how religion impacts people and encouraging its use by the appropriate professionals;
•   Creating resources and training to improve the religious literacies among professionals;
•   Developing and testing curriculum in religion for all disciplines;
•   Presenting public forums and other activities to increase the visibility of religion in the public sphere.

Jeremy Littau

Jeremy Littau is a second-year Ph.D. student at the MU School of Journalism. His work focuses on online media, specifically how user-generated content can both build communities as well as help redefine journalism in the digital age. He has authored five conference papers that focus on citizen journalism, a case study in a recent book on media ethics, and also is co-author of a chapter in the book Blogging, Citizenship and the Future of Media. He joined the Center in 2006.

Littau is working on several projects for the Center, including projects that look at religion coverage in the media and public interest in those issues. Littau is a graduate of Biola University, where he earned a B.A. in journalism. Before coming to MU, Littau worked in journalism for eight years at newspapers of varying size. His last job in the newspaper industry was as an editor at the Los Angeles Daily News.

Ji Xiang, a graduate student in the MU School of Journalism, entered the two-year M.A. program in August 2006. Ji joined the Center in September 2006 as a graduate research assistant. She previously worked at BusinessWeek magazine's Beijing bureau and Hill & Knowlton public relations agency in Shanghai, China. Ji holds a B.A. degree in television journalism from Beijing Broadcasting Institute. In her work at the Center, she is researching religion and news on the Internet.

Kryssy Pease is pursuing an M.A. in in-depth public affairs reporting at MU. Her research interests include the role religion plays in politics, which she will be studying during the presidential election of 2008. She earned a B.J. in broadcast journalism and a B.A. in philosophy from MU in 2007. For her work at the Center, she is analyzing inclusion of religion in journalism textbooks. Pease joined the Center in August 2007.

Tim Walker is a graduate student at the Missouri School of Journalism. He graduated from MU in May 2007 with a B.J. in broadcast journalism and a minor in religious studies. Walker joined the Center in August 2007. His interests include encouraging religious literacy among journalists, religion and state government, and the role of journalists in religious conflict. He is compiling academic journals relating to religion and various professions, as well as assisting in creating a questionnaire to assess religious literacy among journalists.

In her freshman year at MU, Spears is interested in writing and international studies. She received a scholarship from the MU School of Music. After graduation, she intends to work as a travel writer for magazines and newspapers. Spears joined the Center in September 2007 as a work study student. She assists with office duties and promoting Center events.
